CORRECTION

I - COMPRÉHENSION

1. Six members of the narrator's family are mentioned: the narrator's mother ("Mom"), her stepfather ("Daddy Bob"), her aunt ("Aunt Betty"), her two brothers Kevin and Tommy, and her big sister Kwan.

2. The scene is set at San Francisco airport. The family has come to fetch Kwan.

3. They were expecting to see a shy and skinny teenage girl, but actually Kwan was an outgoing, small and plump girl.

(l. 9-10: "This person looked like a strange old lady, short and chubby, not exactly the starving waif Mom pictured").

4. Kwan gave the narrator a grasshopper in a straw cage. The little girl screamed and threw it away in terror, breaking one of its legs in doing so.

5. The narrator's mother used Kwan as a babysitter, so that she could take time for herself and enjoy her budding relationship with Bob.

6. The narrator resented Kwan's constant presence and overwhelming role in her life, first because Kwan was a source of shame and embarrassment with her naïve questions, and secondly because the narrator would have preferred her mother to take care of her.

7. The narrator could see that her mother preferred to spend her time with her husband Bob rather than with her. The narrator must have felt neglected, and was probably jealous of her stepfather.

8. The narrator's brothers and some of their friends played a trick on Kwan: they turned on the sprinkler system as she was sitting on the lawn and she got wet. They laughed at her but the narrator didn't: she yelled at the boys, as if defending her big sister.

9. Je me souviens du jour où l'idée de me débarrasser de Kwan me traversa l'esprit pour la première fois. C'était l'été, quelques mois après son arrivée. Kwan, Kevin, Tommy et moi étions assis sur la pelouse devant la maison, à attendre que quelque chose se passe. Deux ou trois amis de Kevin se faufilèrent le long de la maison et mirent en marche le système d'arrosage.
